Name the action you want
A button click, submitted form, created order and payment are different events. Decide which one your decision depends on. Record the data source, the date it uses and whether it includes a monetary value.
If a report combines different actions, separate them first. A rise in total conversions can otherwise reflect a change in the mix of events rather than a better outcome.
Check the path to the event
Open the landing page, check it on a phone and complete the form in an agreed test mode. Label the test record so it cannot be mistaken for a real enquiry. For Google Ads, the official guidance recommends triggering a test conversion through Tag Assistant to check whether tags fire.
- The form displays a clear success state.
- The event matches the agreed action.
- One test does not create unexpected duplicate records.
- The test record can be found and separated in reporting.
Reconcile with the business record
Compare an agreed period and timezone. Check whether both reports count the same events and statuses. A created order, received payment and the value in an advertising platform can describe different things.
A discrepancy starts an investigation. It does not establish that a particular tool is wrong. First check source coverage, delays, attribution rules and duplicate records.
Define the next test
Once measurement is clear, agree on the objective, spending limit, review conditions and decision owner. There is no universal amount or duration: it depends on the business, available data and sales readiness. If evidence is still limited, make that visible in the decision.
